Emergency Substitutes

Finding yourself right in the middle of a recipe only to realize you're missing an ingredient is something that we can all relate to. Make sure to check out the emergency substitute list on the sidebar.

In the meantime, if you're using a recipe that calls for cake flour (as my angel food cake recipe does) and you don't have cake flour (which most of us don't just keep around), just put 2 tbsp cornstarch in a one cup measuring cup and add all purpose flour. Level it off with the blunt side of a knife. Doing this twice will result in 2 cups of cake flour! I use this all the time actually instead of buying cake flour...mostly because I use cornstarch for all kinds of things so keeping it around is handier than cake flour!
